Finally, the iPhone 3G is here. Well, hopefully it will be here in the Philippines later this year: September if rumors are correct.
Already a lot of speculations are going around with regard to the price Globe Telecoms — the official Philippine carrier of the iPhone — will put on an iPhone 3G subscription. Will it cost subscribers are an arm and a leg? No doubt that the iPhone unit itself will be affordable: Steve Jobs has put it at $199 (roughly Php9,000). But Steve did not put limits on how much carriers can charge subscribers on the subscription.
But I am optimistic that Globe will be quite reasonable. After all, it is Steve’s vision for people who want iPhones to be able to afford them so I don’t think Globe will put a price that would turn off potential subscribers.
Of course, there is a possibility that the iPhone 3G will appear in “unofficial” sources. Although it would seem impossible given the new restrictions (in-store activation) on the purchase of iPhone 3G, I’m sure “enterprising” people will find new ways to go around that, not that I’m condoning such actions. I would still prefer legal ways of acquiring the iPhone to take advantage of Apple’s warranty.
The official release is barely a month away for some countries. I guess I just have to wait a little longer here in the Philippines.
